Why Water Quality Matters for Autism

Legal doesn’t necessarily equal safe. Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years (and in some cases, 40 years).
— - Environmental Working Group (EWG)

We often assume that the water coming from our kitchen sink is surely just fine for our health, right? Not always the case. While the EPA does conduct assessments for city water systems, their threshold is way too low, in my opinion (and the Environmental Working Group’s opinion). It’s important to understand that legal doesn’t necessarily equal safe, and per the EWG, legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years (in some cases, 40 years).

Harmful contaminants and heavy metals can be found in your water supply, and if not filtered, can contribute to major health concerns. Many children with autism aren’t able to detox efficiently, and recent studies show us that there is a positive correlation between the severity of autistic symptoms (social communication deficits and repetitive, restrictive behaviors) and hair metal amounts of lead, aluminum, arsenic, and cadmium [1]. I wrote a blog about this study: Heavy Metal and Essential Trace Element Levels in Hair and Autism Severity, if you’re interested in learning more.

How Do I Know My Water Quality?

One of the best and most reputable ways to learn more about your tap water is the EWG Tapwater Database. You are able to search your zip code and find out the tested contaminants and the recommended levels from both EWG and the EPA. Click below to test your water and get filter recommendations to best fit your water.

My Preferred Water Filters

If you’re looking for a water filter, the EWG Tap Water Database can help lead you in the right direction.

In my professional opinion, I prefer Reverse Osmosis (RO) water systems. You can have these installed in your home (though this is the most costly approach). You can also buy a countertop RO system, like the AquaTru (my personal favorite and the system I personally use). You can use this link for $150 off (no code needed!)

Another good option is the Berkey Water System. Though it isn’t Reverse Osmosis, it removes 99.99% of viruses, pathogenic bacteria, chloramine, pharmaceutics, pesticides, and 203 other contaminants. The benefit of Berkey is that it doesn’t require electricity, just gravity.
