Welcome to the Nourishing Autism Podcast where you take a deep dive into the research on autism and dietary changes, nutrition supplements, and lifestyle modifications. Every week, we break down nutrition topics and an easy-to-understand way for you to feel less overwhelmed and feel confident on your nutrition journey with autism.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the first episode of The Nourishing Autism Podcast. I'm your host Brittyn Coleman, the Autism Dietitian and I'm so excited to be here with you. It's been a dream of mine for years to launch a podcast and it's finally happening!

In this first episode, I want to introduce myself and give you my backstory and lay the groundwork for upcoming episodes so you know what to expect from this podcast. Many of you joining likely already follow me on Instagram and you know me as the Autism Dietitian, you might already know some of my story as well. But for those of you who don't, I want to share it with you so that you can know who I am and what I do as you start listening to my podcast.

First of all, I'm a Registered Dietitian and I specialize in kids with autism. My mission is to help reduce overwhelm for parents looking to improve their child's nutrition to help them feel their best and reach their full potential. I've been in private practice since 2017. And absolutely love what I do and love working with parents. Before I was in my private practice, I worked in interned in multiple centers and clinics for kids with disabilities.

Autism has always been really close to my heart because my younger brother is on the spectrum. His name is Barrett and he was diagnosed with autism. When he was about two, he was nonverbal until he was about four or five. And now he's 26. And doing really well even graduated from college, and we're so proud of him. I get a lot of questions about my relationship with him - And growing up with a brother on the spectrum, I will definitely make future episodes about it, even though it goes a little outside of the realm of you know, “Nourishing Autism”. But that sibling connection is so important. And so many families reach out to me asking about those who have other siblings or other children without autism. So I think that would be really special. And I'd love to have him on here as a guest one day. So long story short, I love him so much. And he is my why behind what I do behind my private practice behind this podcast, and truly drives me to want to help even more families, you know, expand their knowledge of autism and nutrition and empower them to make these changes for their children to help them feel their best. So I work with parents who have kids with autism, because I know what this journey is like, not as a parent, of course, but as a sibling. And I've lived and breathed this journey, and I'm just so honored to be able to work with families and guide them on this journey to help their kids feel great.

My entire approach revolves around dietary changes. And though I'm often integrating in supplements and lifestyle modifications, I always think diet is best. And there are so many pieces to navigating diet, especially for kids with autism, more likely to be picky eaters, there's going to be I'm sure, a lot of episodes on picky eating, and I know an upcoming episode will be on that. So definitely stay tuned if that's something that you need help with too.

So there are a few things that are hard about nutrition for autism. And number one is that everyone is so uniquely different and there's no one size fits all approach. So it definitely takes having a specialized health care provider to walk you through the options and find the right approach for your child.

Number two is that there's so much information and misinformation out there that it just seems so overwhelming as a parent is honestly overwhelming as an expert in this field. So I can't even imagine the feeling as a parent with a new diagnosis of autism or who's just looking to start nutrition for their child with autism, even if it's not a new diagnosis, just trying to navigate this space. And at the same time trying to juggle other therapies like speech and ot PT, feeding therapy, you name it.

So my goal in this podcast is to review what the research has to say about different nutrition topics and take the guesswork and overwhelm out of all of this for you. I also know that you have so many things on your plate each week that it's my goal to keep these episodes to around 10 minutes to help you be able to listen more and get the most important details that you need to know.
