63. Tips for Special Educators to Support Autistic Students (Parents - Share this Episode!)

Brittyn knows how frustrating it can be when professional development rarely applies to early childhood and overlooks relevant topics for autistic students. That’s why she's joining over 25 special educators, parents, psychologists, SLPs, and OTs who advocate for neurodiversity-affirming strategies at the Preschool Autism Summit July 15-17.

During the summit, you’ll learn how to equip your support staff and paraprofessionals with the latest strategies, create compassionate and strength-based classroom environments, and replace outdated methods with practical, current strategies. You’ll gain actionable tools and insights to enhance your teaching practices, promote meaningful engagement, and empower every child to thrive.

Hi, I'm Brittyn, a Registered Dietitian and autism sibling. I have a passion for helping parents of neurodivergent kids navigate nutrition and wellness for their child, one small step at a time. Here we'll explore practical nutrition tips, learn from top autism experts, break down the newest research, and share inspirational stories that will empower you to utilize nutrition to help your child feel their best and thrive.

Listen in while picking kids up from school, sitting in a therapy waiting room, taking a quick walk or wherever you find yourself, looking for some inspiration and a friend to guide you along this journey. This is Nourishing Autism.

Brittyn: If you're a special educator, this episode is for you. And if you are a parent that has a special educator in mind, send them this episode, because I want to make sure that we are raising awareness in terms of resources for autistic students, to help your child do their best in school and have the most support [00:01:00] to be able to thrive in their learning and I have a fantastic resource to share with you.

This is the Preschool Autism Summit and I am a speaker for this upcoming online free summit that I'm so excited about. There are some really amazing other speakers that are educating on so many different topics that can really support your child.

There are three days that have an incredible lineup of speakers and each day has its own category. Day one is communication and language that has some incredible speakers like Jessie Ginsburg of Sensory SLP. And then some other speakers that have actually been on this podcast, there is Rachel Madel who will be sharing more about AAC success.

And she is a past podcast guest and a close friend of mine. And Katja Piscitelli who is actually going to be in an upcoming episode of Nourishing Autism, talking all about gestalt language processing. And she will be speaking among five other fantastic speakers.

On day [00:02:00] two, we'll be talking about regulation and the social emotional piece. And this is the day that I am speaking, talking all about expanding your child's diet and what special educators can do at school to really support your child in this and making sure that they know their role in helping support your child in feeding.

And I'm really excited to share some of these tips. I've never educated in this way before in an online summit. So I'm excited to be able to share these kinds of resources. Other speakers, like my close friend, Molly Johnson, The Autism Consultant and Dr. Taylor Day, both past guests of The Nourishing Autism Podcast will be speaking this day about potty training and PDA. I'm excited to learn from them. We have lots of other speakers that day as well.

And day three is teaching and learning. That has speakers like Amber Arrington, who is another past guest of the podcast, as well as Tara Phillips, who is running the whole thing who [00:03:00] runs Autism Little Learners.

And the amazing thing is that the Preschool Autism Summit it is completely free and you can grab your free ticket by going to nourishingautism.co/summit. We've linked it in the show notes for ya. And you can join in on this fantastic resource that is going to be running from July 15th to July 17th.

You can also grab an all access pass to be able to watch the recordings. I am so excited for it. And I hope you are too. Again, if you are a special educator, this is the summit of the year to attend, to support your autistic students. Join me next week, as I speak with Amanda Mathers, who is an occupational therapist who talks with us all about sensory processing disorder, how this can affect your child's feeding [00:04:00] and toileting. It's a really great episode. And I had such a great time speaking with her. I can't wait to see you there. You can find the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, wherever you get your podcasts.
